With the rapid increase in the demand for energy worldwide, steam emerges as a primary energy transfer medium for power generation, industrial processing and space heating. Boilers with more sophisticated design, large capacity, higher condensate return, higher operation cycle and complicate external treatment are prevailing. In other words, current boilers are more vulnerable to iron, sludge and impurities, as a result, a total diagnostic approach is required for steam generating systems which comprise pre-treatment, boiler, condensate line and turbine in order to minimize corrosion, deposition and carryover.
In this short paper we take a brief look at industrial boiler water treatment and the management of steam boilers from an industrial perspective. We examine some of the problems that can occur when steam boilers are used in industrial. ADVANCE CHEMTECH also looks at solutions to the problems and how these solutions are applied together in relate to specific products dosage, usage and more….
WHAT IS STEAM AND IT USES?
Steam is vaporized water, being part gas and part liquid. Steam itself is usually interspersed with minute droplets of water in its liquid state, which gives it a white, cloudy appearance. In industrial process, steam is generated through heated boiler water under controlled conditions. The energy generated is then transferred and used in many different ways.
Steam is widely used in industries including food, paper, process, chemical, manufacturing and so on. When steam is produced by boiler in different design, size, type, pressure and likewise, it makes the life of water treatment especially interesting.
WHAT PROBLEMS ARISE AND HOW DO THEY OCCUR?
Steam under pressure is at elevated temperatures, greater than 100C and therefore can be used to transfer energy to different parts of a system. Water before convert to steam, is cycle up in boiler, thus contains impurities and it is these impurities that cause problems. Problems such as hardness leakage, silica ingression, and oxygen cum carbon dioxide infusion with metal and caustic attack will expose boiler to threat if not taken care of. Thus we have to know the best option to threat the various configurations.
There are several problems within a boiler system which require chemical treatment or other mechanical adjustments.
These problems are;-
- » Deposition
- » Corrosion
- » Carryover
- » Pitting
They can cause problems in all parts of the steam generating system starting from pre-treatment leading into the boiler and the condensate system. They are arisen due to poor quality of make-up and the manner of the system is operation. In extreme casa, they even cause boilers to explode, causing severe damage to plant and risk the life of the operators. A of these issues are avoidable with good chemicals maintenance program. Hence it is ADVANCE CHEMTECH responsibility to address and overcome the above problems
